Barack Obama, the democratic nominee, won office in the year 2008. All of his campaign promises were revolved around change. He promised to lower taxes for middle class, raise taxes from 15 to 20% for upper class, eliminate some taxes for small businesses, create funds for advanced manufacturing businesses, increase environmental friendliness, find alternative energy, provide health care to millions, provide capital for minority businesses, close loopholes in the economy, and much more. The fact that he won with 53% to McCain’s 46% not only showed that his ideas were liked by most Americans, but it also showed that America backed most of his campaign promises. In addition, it represented dissatisfaction in the Bush administration. In addition to a democratic president, 20 seats in the House of Representatives were taken over and 5 seats in the Senate. One of the biggest part of the elections was that a woman ran against Obama for the democratic nominee, and an African-American won the race for president, showing that bigotry is heavily declining in the US.
Senator John McCain, republican nominee
Obama has tried to compromise matters with the ideas of Republicans in conjunction with what he promised to carry out. Obama has slowly pulled out of the Iraq war, and stimulate the ever declining economy of the time by spreading the wealth to ensure more equality among Americans. In his inaugural speech he spoke in an optimistic tone. Today there are still many problems, however. Unemployment rates stay high, almost at 10%, and our troops still haven’t been completely taken out of Iraq. The oil spill also was not handled how many Americans wanted. Obama has two years left to help this country thrive again, and many are beginning to question when the real change is coming.
